The beautiful and poised actress Grace Kelly lived a fairytale life with an enviable movie career during the Golden Age of Hollywood that led her to meet her prince charming, have a storybook wedding, and become a real-life princess. Thanks to a trip to the 1955 Cannes Film Festival and a fellow Hollywood actress’s matchmaking husband, Grace Kelly was introduced to Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Grace Kelly’s Hollywood career was relatively short-lived. The 20-year-old Philadelphia native graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1949 and set her sights on a show business career. She made her film debut in the 1951 movie Fourteen Hours, followed quickly by the 1952 High Noon. She caught the attention of critics with her Academy Award nomination-worthy performance in John Ford’s 1953 adventure romance film, Magambo. She won the Best Actress Oscar with her dramatic performance in The Country Girl in 1954. She also starred in three Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief.
In May 1955, Grace Kelly was on her way to the Cannes Film Festival in France aboard a train. She was accompanied by her good friend, Gladys de Segonzac, and they discovered that fellow American actress Olivia de Havilland and her husband, Pierre Galante, the editor of a Paris newspaper, were also on the train. It was Galante, as the story goes, that was so taken with the poised and confident Grace Kelly that he wanted to introduce her to Prince Rainier of Monaco, one of the most eligible bachelors in the world at that time.
Arrangements were made for Grace Kelly to meet Prince Rainier for a photo opp at the royal palace in the Principality of Monaco. The meeting took place on May 6, 1955. Grace Kelly was 25 years old. The prince was 32 and had been the ruler of Monaco for nearly six years.
At 3 p.m. that day, Pierre Galante escorted Grace Kelly to the palace for her meeting with Prince Rainier. But he was late. The prince was caught up with previous meetings, so a palace official gave Grace Kelly a thorough tour of the palace. An hour later, Prince Rainier finally arrived. He posed for photographs with Grace Kelly, as requested, but the prince felt bad for keeping her waiting. To make it up to her, Prince Rainier offered to give her a tour of the palace. When he learned that she had already had a tour, he invited her for a stroll through the gardens.
As the story goes, the walk through the impeccable grounds of the Palace of Monaco gave the couple the opportunity to relax and shirk off the formalities of the day. They enjoyed a great conversation and the prince showed off his charm and personality. Grace Kelly responded with coy flirtations. Soon, however, Kelly had to leave to attend a reception at the Cannes Film Festival, but she promised to keep in touch with Prince Rainier.
Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier engaged in a long-distance courtship that involved a lot of letter writing. In fact, their hand-written notes to each other are a testament to their love story. During this time, the couple kept their relationship hidden from the public. After all, they were both public figures. For his part, Prince Rainier was under much pressure to marry and produce heirs, but he wanted to make sure he found the ideal match for himself and for the people of Monaco. After a few brief meetings and a series of letters, he was certain he found the perfect woman in Grace Kelly.
Nearly a year after they met, on April 19, 1956, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier were married. Kelly wore a stunning wedding gown designed by Helen Rose, an Academy Award-winning costumer for MGM. The ceremony was held in the ornate Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Monaco and was broadcast live on television. An estimated 30 million people tuned in to watch the fairytale wedding, one of the first world events of the television era to generate a media frenzy. After they said their ‘I do’s’, Prince Rainier and the new Princess of Monaco left on their seven-week honeymoon aboard the royal yacht as it toured around the Mediterranean Sea.
Upon their wedding, Grace Kelly acquired 142 official royal titles, but she gave up the title of actress. Although she was only 26 years old, she officially retired from acting to devote herself to her duties as princess. By all accounts, the couple was deeply in love with each other. In 1957, they had their first child, Princess Caroline. Their son, Prince Albert, was born in 1958 and became the heir to the throne. Another daughter, Princess Stephanie, was born in 1965.
For 26 years, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier enjoyed a romance that is usually only seen in fairytales or Hollywood movies. That ended tragically in September 1982 when Grace Kelly, then 52 years old, suffered a medical emergency while driving and crashed her car.
